Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is pain in the heel or sole of the foot and is typically worse first thing in the morning or when you have been sitting for a while and have unloaded your feet. Its caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia which runs from your heel to the toes. It can be caused by unsupportive foot wear, high impact through your feet when exercising, high instep (arch) or carrying a bit of extra weight among other reasons . It is very painful but there a few simple steps you can take to settle the symptoms. Rest, ice, better foot wear with an arch support, insoles, anti inflammatories, stretching and strengthening exercises to work the calf/achilles/intrinsic muscles of your feet. Taping may also help support the foot until your muscles start working as they should. Most of the time this combo will allow your symptoms to settle and is always the first line of attack. It is rare to have plantar fasciitis that doesn't resolve but it does occasionally happen, in this case your doctor can refer you to a specialist for advice.
